The Polka Dots traveled up to Elkton Oregon for the last West Coast National hare scramble of the year and some much anticipated championships were on the line for several of our members. Some of us Dots made it to Roseburg on July 4th and heard the best 4th of July Fireworks in all the land at a wonderful campground Charlie Coiner found, ps we didn’t see one damn firework! ETRA ( Emerald Trail Riders Assoc) served up a fine dish of that “Funky Chicken” at the traditional Big K Ranch although it was later in the year on July 4th weekend and its usually held on fathers day, this made for some very dry chicken, but I’m not complaining about dust because I’ve raced there when its wet and wet is the worst of the two evils. The Temps were perfect racing weather in the 70’s and 80’s and unless you were sitting in the pits the wind was just enough to blow the dust away out in the open.
Our club coming from out of state I believe represented very well, as well as all D-36 riders. We made up more than half of all the podiums and our youth purely dominated on Saturday! With our friends and family and support crews plus racers I counted more than 40 in our immediate camp/pits, so to say we came to represent is an understatement. Our DOTS walked away with 5 National Western Hare Scramble Championships and Swept 1st-3rd NWHS Supermini’s! Damn impressive is all I have to say!!
First up on Saturday was the Supemini’s and the 85’s. When the flag flew and the bikes fired all you could see was a wall of DOTS coming into the first turn and out into the forest!! It was a beautiful sight! One of the best races I saw all weekend was Baby Loch turn it up a notch in the 85 class and went toe to toe for 1.5 hrs with Tennant another D36 rider, You could throw a blanket over them for all except the last 10 minutes when Lochlan pulled the gap and the win and for a 1st 85 and 3rd O/A! Excellent job kiddo. We need to get the DOT Dads that pit in shape for that occasional run back to the trailer because your son has a flat and we need that extra tire in your trailer a ¼ mile away !!, Just ask Rick Parker about that. but we got Mason pitted like pro’s and he never got passed in our pit! Our DOT kids took the top 5 overall spots in the combined races! These Kids had a feast of dry funky chicken and loved every bit of it! What I truly love about watching them race is knowing that they are all best friends on and off the track, and watching them grow up to be men through the trials and tribulations of a race environment brings a tear to my eye, there just is no better life lessons than what you learn as a racer!

The second race of Saturday we had the C seniors, and C 200 racers up.
Going back to back races Max Parker took the top honors on this one for a 1st C-200 wrapping up the C-200 NWHS Championship and his little Bro Mason 2nd C 200, with Charlie Coiner taking a 13th C senior with something going wrong at the end with his bike and Ray Kirchner really didn’t have an excuse with a brand new 2013 WR 450 that had never even touched dirt until they unloaded it in Oregon, but regardless took 15th, something about being stuck in a bush, etc etc..He wouldn’t even let me race it on Sunday! Oh and since I’m writing the report I’ll brag a little bit about my Daughter Kyleigh which beat both these ol guys in the overall, took 1st and also wrapped up a NWHS championship in the women’s wearing her unapproved custom pink polka dot vest and she’s now demanding #2x!!
Sunday Morning we woke up to a nice marine cloud layer, slight wind and 65 degrees and race time was 10am for all the pros, A’s&B’s in the only race of the day, they added a few more down hills and an optional road jump along with an optional endurocross matrix, course length was around 14 miles, a 5 lap or 3 hour time limit. I was in the A vet row and had a few rows head start on JT Baker (B-250), Ty Baker (B-Open), and Calum Campbell (B-200).
We all got pretty good starts, and the grass track had really good traction, I pushed hard to get into 2nd before the single track knowing that it was going to be a no visibility dust race for the 1st lap and once we hit the single track the passing came to a halt, so I settled in, and just tried not to make any mistakes and get over aggressive in the dust, it was going to be a long 3 hour race! After the 1st lap the dust settled down as the riders separated and it started getting fun now that I could see, they had some really long rutted, rooted, silty up hills and step downhills and long 5th gear wide open meadows, I managed to hold 2nd the whole race and never saw any of those punk kids come flying by me, my last lap was total survival and I honestly couldn’t have went another lap.
JT Baker had a great race and took the 1st Overall B class win and 1st in B-250, and an impressive 18th OVERALL with the pros,A’s & B’s combined and wrapped up the NWHS Championship in the B-250 class. Ty Baker also had a great race taking 3rd B-Open and also wrapped up NWHS Championship in the B-open class. Calum Campbell had to come in to pit with a flat tire and again we had Pit Dads (Brock)running around out of shape looking for a tire, some nice gent loaned Brock a tire with rim, it got changed and Calum pulled off a 5th in the B-200 class to secure a NWHS Championship!!! Our pit crews and friends were on point all weekend and did a great job in the pits, We thank you!
I would say that the DOTS got FUNKY in Oregon and the CHICKEN was good! We walked away with 5 class champions in the series, ran the table in the supermini’s, and countless other podiums! We couldn’t do this without our best support crews in our members, our friends, mom’s, wives, relatives, and sponsors. We thank all of you! So Until next time, this is your Rhodes Captain over and out!!
